You’re blasting out job applications and attending networking events- you’ve even consulted a career coach and hired a resume writer. You spend hours every day dedicated to your job search, and you only surf social media in order to update your LinkedIn profile or like a potential mentor’s Facebook page. In short, you’re doing everything right in order to find a job. Or so you thought. Truth is, there are things that you could be doing to make your job search more successful- and none of them have anything to do with work. Here  are some unexpected ways to to boost your job search performance: Get some exercise. One of the biggest benefits of flexible work is just that- it’s flexible. You can schedule any appointments, including gym time, at your leisure instead of having to cram it all into your lunch hour or after work. But studies have found that people who work remotely might not always get the exercise that they need. So it’s important to incorporate healthy habits into your workflow, even before you’ve accepted a job offer. Take the time to exercise each day- walking your pooch around the block can count, too- and reap the benefits, such as increased productivity, better mental focus, and stronger stamina, all of which can help boost your job search performance. Try meditation. You might not think that you can om your way to finding a job, but you can. Although meditation might seem like the last thing to do to peak your performance, it can help soothe frayed nerves, assuage the uncertainty that comes with job searching, and aid in connecting you to what you really want to do with your career- and your life. Work on your hobbies. Your passion for photography doesn’t have to fall by the wayside simply because you’re job hunting. In fact, keeping up with your hobbies can help stimulate your creative side, allowing you to think outside of the box. A recent study has shown that being creative can improve your performance, so be sure to make some time for passion projects or things that help you relax. Taking the focus off of your job search (temporarily) can give you a much-needed brain boost and the chance to think of ideas that can positively impact your job hunt. Score some zzz’s. With job searching, it’s not always the amount of time you spend searching, but the quality of the time spent. After all, you could spend hours tweaking (and retweaking) your resume, and at the end of the day, not have applied for a single position. So when you’re feeling frustrated or feeling like  your job search isn’t going anywhere, take a break from your computer and take a nap. The restorative power of sleep can vastly improve the quality of your job search, improve cognitive function and memory, and reduce your overall stress levels. Eat well. You’re so eager to start your job search each morning that you just grab a greasy doughnut and a large coffee and hunker down at your desk to start churning out job applications. But eating well gives you the necessary nutrients to function at your best. Too much sugar might give you an immediate boost, but you’ll ultimately crash and burn a couple of hours later. Opt instead for smaller, more frequent healthier meals and snacks to keep you energized- and away from the fun but bad for you foods- all day long. If you want to boost your job search performance, you shouldn’t spend all day on your search, applying for every position possible, and stressing yourself out.
